This cute critter is a striped polecat. Found throughout the African continent, this species inhabits diverse areas from coastal sand dunes to forests. They are nocturnal in nature, spending their days sleeping in secluded areas and emerging at night to hunt. As carnivores that feed primarily on beetles and small rodents, polecats can play an important role acting as pest control in areas with pastures, protecting crops local people depend on. Known throughout North America as a buzzard, the turkey vulture is a widespread and important scavenger species. Through their feeding habits, these birds consume carcasses that could pose health threats to both humans and livestock. Full-grown adults have few natural predators, but should a turkey vulture ever feel threatened, it will defend itself by vomiting powerful stomach acids and semi-digested meat, producing a odor so foul it causes most predators to quickly retreat. A great horned owl's eyes don’t move in their sockets—because their eyes are shaped like tubes and held in place by bony structures called sclerotic rings—but they can swivel their heads more than 180 degrees to look in any direction. I had the opportunity to onboard this cutie to the Photo Ark during a visit to Zoo Atlanta several years ago. When they’re born, panda cubs are 1/900th the size of their mother. For scale, that means babies like this one were once the size of a stick of butter. But as we know, baby pandas won’t stay tiny for long - as they reach adulthood they have the potential to weigh nearly 330 pounds. Talk about a growth spurt! #panda #giantpanda #cub #baby #animal #wildlife #NationalPandaDay #animalphotogr
